Culture Appropriation That iconic Cotton Club imagery caught a stuck unspoken emotion in my throat. I did not know the Cotton Club catered to all-white audiences. I drove by it a few weeks ago; it looks all alone on its own little island. I noticed the all-Black audience gets to be captured as individuals, while the white performers blend into each other. Especially the women—they look almost identical. They are gone; only their purpose to serve remains visible to the observer.
Father of Gynecology The anger, the frustration, the pain—all visible on the cotton cloth. The impending death of the image thick in the air. There is so much pressure put on Black women to produce fruit for America. The system tells people like me to work hard for the profit of others. To get pregnant with Black babies and survive the birth, while somehow living with the constant anxiety of ignorant white people's mood swings possibly leading to the murder of said Black child. I reevaluated what reparations meant to me. This is not justice. This is wrong, and sick, and vile—no matter who it is happening to. Even in this alternate reality where our souls are tainted with blood, we are still so beautiful to me. Is that wrong? I can still see a path of redemption for my people, no matter how dark things get. There might be hope after all. Maybe.

"I had a hard realization when I found out that archiving your life goals isn't as fulfilling as you think its going to be. When I got married, it was this big thing, but the next day, nothing had actually changed in our day to day life. Same thing when we bought our house, it was supposed to be this big milestone, but after a brief adjustment period, the day to day still feels the same. I ended up feeling very disappointed that the things I was excited for growing felt so anticlimactic. This is why we need to learn to be happy in our day to day lives. The feeling you get when completing a goal is temporary, you always adjust to the new circumstances, then it's still just you, living with yourself."
